Goalies be aware!
All indications lead to yet another downsizing of goal equipment. The IIHF has already mandated the downsizing of the catch gloveand there has been talk of further reducing the pad size down to 10 inches. With these new equipment changes on the way to the International hockey scene it is only a matter of time before they come to affect us here in North America.Like always the NHL has a trickle down effect to minor hockey and now from kids to young adults the pad adjustment alone could go from 12 inches to 10 inches. For those goaltenders who made the choice to go to 11 inches before the mandate will have an advantage over the goaltender who will now have to make up 2"s a leg. With the inevitable changes being made, we too must understand and realize what adjustments we must make in order to be successful. So how can goaltenders make up the difference of 2 inches and eventualy 4 inches of net coverage?
( 1 ) Positioning. In order to gain proper positioning goaltenders must possess the power and the necessary foot skills to propel them out of the net and the control to be able to stop and be prepared to react to a shot or a pass situation.
( 2 ) Net Awareness. Believing in your positioning gives you the composure and the confidence to patiently wait for the shot to be taken rather than panicking and opening up holes with unnecessary movement.
( 3 ) Save Selection. Not all shots require goaltenders to block, butterfly or slide. Good habits and good save selection not only saves the puck but it saves energy, and it enables the goalie to recover with more speed and control. For years we at Canadian Goaltending Academy have stressed the importance of Positioning , Net Awareness and Reaction Time Vs purely blocking on every shot. No longer will goalies be able to fill the net with bulging equipment to gain size and make up for deep positioning, but rather they will have to work and battle for positioning at the top of the crease to allow smaller, quicker, precise & controlled reactions to successfully keep pucks out of the net. Goaltenders will need to combine explosive speed with patience; the ability to work hard on puck movement and arrive on time in a controlled, balanced position allowing them a maximum success rate on the initial shot and enabling them to recover immediately for any any rebound or pass situation. At Canadian Goaltending Academy we are proud to successfully provide today's quality training for tomorrows goaltender.
